Slowing Down

When life feels like it’s passing by and you don’t have any control, that can lead to burnout, stress, anxiety, and a handful of other unpleasant mental health effects.

For me, slowing down has been a positive way to lower those feelings of life passing me by, and therefore lower burnout and anxiety. When I consciously take time out of my day and think through some of the below thoughts, I am able to continue my day afterward feeling a little more refreshed and in control.

  • Saying “No, thank you” is OK and allowed

  • Blocking out time during the day to sit still or do nothing is also OK and allowed

  • Recognizing that good things take time

  • Re-realizing that consistency is key

  • Acknowledging that intention matters

  • Acknowledging that self care tactics can look different depending on person, place, timing, needs and wants

  • Practicing traditional meditation is a great way to slow down

  • Acknowledging that also many activities can be performed in a meditative state

  • Acknowledging that engaging with thoughts and actions is a choice

  • Admitting that slowing down feels really good for me and this season of my life, but it may not be for everyone

  • Meditation, especially loving kindness meditation, can be really helpful

  • Practicing increased self awareness and learning to direct my thoughts is also very helpful

Walking around the neighborhood taking pictures of flowers is one activity I lean into for slowing down.
